This winter, I wore more scarves—indoors and out—than ever before. I doubled my scarf collection and had a blast with colors, weaves and different knots. Some spring 2011 collections are showing a scarf—long, thin and in a neutral color—as an accessory for a simple neutral color sheath or tunic over matching trousers, channeling a 1920s flapper look. The long, summer scarf is a flattering choice for women over 50. It’s feminine and a quick fix for little neck flaws. Personally, however, I’m ready for a change.
I’ve been admiring necklaces with layers of beads for spring 2011. I think they’re a great choice for women over 50 for one simple reason: They aren’t “big jewelry.” If you’ve read my ramblings in the past, you know I hate big jewelry on older women. When older women wear jewelry with big chains and stones, it’s as if they are announcing to the world: “Please look at my big, ridiculous, masculine jewelry, instead of my old lady flaws!” What an awful image to project! By contrast, layers of beads are very feminine, softening the harsh realities of aging. Take for instance, the Facetted Amethyst Beads
