FOF: 5 Best Looks Over 50 in Glitter, Sequins & Metallics

Sequin Skirt (Brown, Size SM)

Not surprisingly, this fall's love fest with the shiny stuff—glitter, sequins, metallics—has reached a feverish pitch during the holiday season. Glittery garments have been making the scene at night as well as during the day (gasp!). On a recent afternoon, I saw a young woman strolling the beach in a solid sliver sequin top. It was a bit blinding, needless to say. Personally, I prefer the twinkle of glitter and sequins by candlelight or moonlight--at night, that is. A sparkly garment, like the Sequin Skirt (Brown, Size SM) (was $129, now $59) above, can rescue me from the winter doldrums, energizing me for a night on the town. (I'm ga-ga for those chocolate brown sequins!) So for this week's Favorites Over Fifty (FOF), I've assembled my favorite looks in glitter, sequins and metallics for over 50 women.

Whether you’re thinking about adding a little twinkle to your New Year’s Eve look or for an upcoming 'black tie optional' wedding or to just wipe away the winter doldrums, click "Read More" below to see my favorite glittery options. I've included current marked downs where applicable and the text hyperlinks, so you can learn more about the garments or shop.

Wedding Style: What to Wear to “Black Tie Optional”?

A Flattering50 reader recently emailed and wrote: "I’m going to a wedding in December and the invitation says ‘black tie optional.' How should I dress?” There's no getting around it: ‘Black tie optional’ signals that a formal affair is planned and that family, friends and honored guests are encouraged to dress up. For women, appropriate formal attire consists of either an evening gown or a fancy cocktail-length dress or glamorous suit. If you occasionally attend black tie affairs, such as fund raisers, you may have an evening gown or two already in your closet. For the rest of us, a dressy suit or cocktail dress may be the more reasonable choice.

Still, the question remains: How do you know if your outfit is “dressy” enough for a black tie optional or BTO affair? Lucky for me, an over 50 girlfriend recently attended a 'BTO' wedding and agreed to let me share the dress (above) and accessories she wore with Flattering50 readers.  Click "Read More" to continue...

An Evening Wrap: Elegant Solution for Aging Arms

What do you do when your arms are aging, but you're not ready to stop wearing sleeveless dresses or tops, especially to evening weddings or holiday parties? That's been one of my fashion over 50 dilemmas lately. I find  plenty of good-looking long-sleeve dresses and tops for daytime, but they're not stylish and sophisticated enough for evening. For once, I'm happy to say there's an elegant solution: the evening wrap. An evening wrap is dressier than everyday shawls. They're made with luxurious materials--chiffon, satin, velvet, to name a few--and often have a little shimmer from sequins or metallic embroidery.  Because they're so many choices in evening wraps, it's easy for the woman over 50 to find one to match her personal style. Click "read more" for more on evening wraps and where to shop.

Schiaparelli & Prada: The Art of Successful Mismatch

I finally got over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see this year’s fashion exhibition, “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.” The Met’s annual fashion exhibitions have been a highlight of my summer for many years. The exhibits always give me a new perspective on fashion, and, yes, even a few tips on creating my own over 50 style. But after all the hubbub and long lines associated with last year’s “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” show, I was a bit nervous. Happily, I got to this year's exhibit before noontime and found it wasn’t jammed with visitors. To continue reading, click “read more” below…

Over 50 Dresses: Keeping the Romance

Jones New York Dress Cap Sleeve Crossover Dress (Pattern)

Do you have plans for Valentine’s Day? The holiday is on Monday this year, so my husband and I are celebrating on the Saturday before. We’re going out to dinner and then to a Shawn Colvin concert. (Favorite Colvin song: Her version of “Tenderness on the Block” by Warren Zevon.) I’ll probably wear a dress that evening because I like to dress up when I go out. Dressing up seems to add to the romance of an evening out. And I’m all for fueling romance. Current dress styles are brimming with romantic details—ruffles, draping, fluttering hemlines, jewel colors, floral prints, light-as-a-feather fabrics—all of which are super flattering for women over 50. Take a peak at these romantic dresses. Some are hot new styles and others are hot because they are on sale.

I have two dresses like the Jones New York Dress Cap Sleeve Crossover Dress (Pattern) at the top of this post. I’ve got a pear-shaped body and the empire waist styling with a fitted upper torso and flared skirt are very flattering. I also find that the light-as-feather fabric is very forgiving and very feminine. This dress is on sale for $110.99 with an additional 30% off at checkout.

GET RUFFLED
Ruffles soften any dress style and give the garment that "special occasion" look. Here are a few romantic dresses with ruffles.

This Jones New York Dress Shutter Chemise Dress (Pattern) might look lovely on women with straight waist, petite and small bust body shapes. It's on sale for $111.99 with an additional 30% off at checkout.

Women with straight waist, hour glass and petite body shapes often look smashing in dresses with defined waists like this Jones New York Dress Ruffle Front Wrap A-Line Dress (Blue), priced at $168.

GREAT DRAPE
A little draping in the front will hide the outline of the stomach and/or other little lumps and bumps without enveloping you in a tent of fabric. (Remember: A tent-like dress without any structure will make you look much bigger than you are.) This next Jones New York Dress Draped Twist Front Dress (Pattern) might be a comfortable choice for women with small busts or apple-shaped bodies. It's been reduced from $128 to $95.99. However, it's only available in sizes 4 and 6 online.

Below are a few dress styles with draping that might look great on women with hour glass, plus size and straight waist body shapes. For instance, this Jones New York Black and White Side Drape Dress, Ships 2/3 (Pattern) is priced at $128 and will be ready to ship on Feb. 3.

Pick of the Day: The Little Black Dress

Ruffle Sheath Dress Sheath Dress (Black)

My closet hasn't been without a little black dress for 30 years. It's my fashion security blanket. While I may decide to buy something new or choose to wear something else in my wardrobe to an evening event, I love knowing I could always wear my little black dress. I spied the Ruffle Sheath Dress Sheath Dress (Black) above while I was researching another post and thought: "Wow, what a great style for women over 50." It's my Fashion Over 50: Pick of the Day because it solves so many fashion concerns of older women. And there's more good news: the Anne Klein dress is currently on sale, reduced from $118 to $69.99.

Little black dresses are often simple sleeveless sheaths. Some are cut straight, while others cling to a woman's curves. If you aren't tall, they can look boxy. And if you aren't thin, they can cling to all the wrong places. That's why I was so excited when I saw this Anne Klein dress. The high waistband, not quite an empire band, gives the garment shape. And the tailored peplum offers great stomach concealment. The short sleeves will hide less-than-perfect upper arms. And the open styling across the shoulders and front vertical neck slit are very feminine without exposing a huge amount of over 50 skin. The ruffle also is feminine.

MORE BLACK DRESSES
Needless to say, one little black dress style isn't going to flatter every over 50 woman. So I looked for a few more possibilities. The V-neck dress with the empire waist below is perfect for the pear shaped body. If you have a curvy body shape, the dress with the full skirt on the right might work. If you look good in boat-neck tops, I bet this dress would look wonderful. And a dress with lace is a great over 50 style. I threw in a couple of little black dress accessories as well. Shopping information appears below the photos.

Are You A Carnivore? Herbivore? Polyvore?

I’m always searching the media—online, in print—to learn about new trends and developments in the fashion world to write about in my blog. I’ve been reading and hearing about a site called Polyvore. Over the past three-day weekend, I decided to check the site out for myself. Polyvore offers a “social shopping experience.” Visitors can shop by browsing current fashions in collages, known as "sets," created by Polyvore members. Or you can become a member and create your own sets of favorite fashions.

Since anyone can become a Polyvore member, I decided to join and see what it was like to create my own set. Below is my very first set--rather stripped down compared with the more experienced Polyvore "sets" makers. It was fun and easy and gave me a chance to check out lots of fashions online.

For my first "set," I collected the latest leather and lace fashions. I think I'm fond of this combination because it’s a little naughty, a little nice. Plus, it's not your ho-hum sweater and skirt or slacks. Lace and leather create a fun on-the-town look for women over 50. Styling, of course, is everything. You'll want to choose a jacket and skirt that flatters your shape. Classic styling with clean lines is preferable as well. Avoid jackets with fringe or other heavy metal embellishments, please. The skirt should also be simple and knee-length--no minis or thick layers of lace. If you have great legs, throw on a cute pair of booties. If you don't, go with tall boots. Grab a clutch bag and head out the door to paint the town. (Do people still use that expression?)

Here are my picks from the Polyvore website. And, yes, I would wear the black leather with the dark blue skirt. It's my new favorite color combination.

Over 50 Online Dating

In my last post, I shared some style tips for dating after 50 gathered from single, 50+ women. In the process of getting those tips, my dating friends offered some advice on using online dating sites. Here are those tips as well as a few more fashions for the over 50 woman getting together with someone she's met online for the first time. Whether you choose something more dressy, like the clothing in my previous post, or a casual top like the ones shown below will, of course, depend on your personal style.

When it comes to dating over 50, the important thing is to keep a positive attitude. According to US Census Bureau, almost 40% of Americans who are 45 or older are single. No doubt, the group consists of more women than men. Still, it’s encouraging. You are not alone out there!Organic Cotton Shirt

How exactly are you supposed to find all these 45 and older men? Unless you’re in a retirement community already or one of those restricted "55 or older" condomium community, you’re unlikely to find a large pool of people the same age. I’ve known women who’ve held out for that miracle meet at work or through a social connection, night class, volunteer work or, perhaps, at the gym. By and large, they haven’t found anyone. If you’re a 50+ woman who’s left the workplace to raise kids, you might not even have a job. Volunteer work might put 60+ woman in touch with civic-minded, retired 70 year olds, but most of my 50ish friends want someone a little younger—if possible. And do over 50 women feel flirty in their sweaty exercise togs at the gym? I can't imagine it.

That leaves online dating. At last count, I saw about 20 online dating websites. Interestingly, half of the sites were directed towards dating for men and women over 50. Everyone I talked to has a different opinion on which is the best. Fortunately, online dating services tend to offer free trials, so you can see which one suits your needs.

I’ve interspersed a few tops for the first "face-to-face" meeting with an online guy among the online dating tips below. My previous posting (“Dating Over 50: What to Wear?”) talks a little more about date styling. It's pretty basic stuff. The over 50 woman going on a first date should wear something flattering and comfortable. Personally, I love the classic collared shirt (above) in white or a pastel color. It looks great, especially on women with nice legs. Pair it with a nice pair of jeans and you're good to go. Something feminine is also good. But too much cleavage may seem a little desperate. (I’m not sure too much cleavage after 50 is a good idea—ever.) Perhaps, something like this feminine ruffled blouse.

ONLINE DATING Do’s and Don’t’s
Don’t get discouraged by how many men our age don’t want to date women over 35. I say, “Thanks for letting me know up front that you’re one of those men.” Note: In researching this post, I came across a dating site called http://www.50plussinglesdating.com/ 50 Plus Singles Dating and was astonished to see four couples, three with women well under 50, pictured on the home page.

Do convey your personality in as few words as possible when completing your profile. I’m a writer and I know: words are easily misinterpreted. Avoid misunderstandings by writing simply and concisely. And make sure your tone is upbeat. Online dating may seem a little depressing and unromantic, but try to convey a positive outlook.

Do enlist the help of a trusted friend when filling out your profile. It’s sometimes hard to describe yourself in depth (some profiles are quite lengthy!). A good friend can help you list all your wonderful attributes, in the event you draw a blank or are hesitant to writing about yourself.

Don’t fall into the ‘passing emails’ trap. I had a friend who exchanged emails with a guy for a month before she meet him. Apparently, he was very witty in his emails and she had high hopes. They met at a bar for a glass of wine. It turned out he wasn’t her type physically and he wasn’t funny in person. She’d wasted a month on a dead end. If you see/read about someone that interests you, arrange to meet in person as soon as possible. You need to find out if there’s chemistry and that only happens in person.

Do plan to meet somewhere away from where you live. That way, you’re less likely to run into him again, if the first date is unsuccessful.

Do tell someone (a friend or sibling) where/when you’re meeting the guy and that you will call afterwards. It’s always good to err on the side of safety.

Don’t make a big deal out of the date. Your biological time clock has expired. You don’t have to worry about meeting Mr. Right—the man who will give you children and be a devoted husband and father. Enjoy the adventure; enjoy meeting new people. Here's an outfit (below) you might want to consider: A simple shell with a floral wrap. Color is always a good idea. A colorful scarf or wrap is upbeat without being too much.

Do plan, if possible, to go on several ‘first dates’ with different men at the same time. It’s best not to expect perfection the first time out. If one ‘first date’ is a dead end, you’ll appreciate having other ‘first dates’ to look forward to.

Do plan an activity for the second date. Simply going out to dinner on a second date puts a lot of pressure on the two of you to make conversation. Instead, go to a play, concert or art exhibit—something that can fuel the conversation. Afterwards, go for a bite to eat or a drink—you’ll have a lot more to talk about.

Good luck!
