Is your New Year’s Resolution to start dating? Or, perhaps, to find a new dating site? Recently, the New York Times reported on a number of “niche dating sites” in article entitled, Narrowing the Field Before Playing It. At these sites, members share a common interest, from books and pets to Mac computers and more.
I could tell you about four girlfriends and work colleagues, ages 31 to 58, who’ve had pretty good results with the two major online dating sites—eHarmony and Match.com. Conversely, I’ve got two over 50 girlfriends who, hard as they try, haven’t found a good match online. I have a theory about the experiences of these two friends, both of whom live in New York City. I suspect it’s tougher to find older men who want to date older women in areas heavily populated by under 40 women also looking for men. The older men seem to feel they don’t have to settle for anyone middle-aged. On the one hand, I say, “good ridden” to men like that. However, without such encouragement, the same older urban men might be clearer thinking, realizing the many advantages to dating older women. Whatever the reason, my friends are in the market for fresh dating sites.
I love the idea of niche dating sites described in the New York Times article. It’s kind of a throwback to old-time dating strategies of meeting men through common interests and activities—work, church, school, clubs and so forth. Check out alikewise.com, which is a book lovers online dating site. Members search possible “matches” by checking out other people’s lists of favorite books. Members also get alerts when someone mentions a book they love.
Dating sites for older people is a niche as well. Dating Sites Review has a web page dedicated to online sites for meeting older men. It lists seniorpeoplemeet.com, which is also described in the NY Times article. The site has links to lots of other dating sites as well.
