Style Over 50: Five Things to Avoid

Going out? Scroll down for 'looks to avoid' plus a few solutions

I’ve been going into Manhattan two or three times a week since Thanksgiving for shopping, meeting friends, and seeing a couple of plays. At this time of year, the holiday spirit seems to consume New Yorkers, and they—for one month only—tend to be incredibly thoughtful and sensitive toward their fellow man. (During the other 11 months, New Yorkers will bend over backwards for you if you need help—but only if you can get their attention. Otherwise, New Yorkers are oblivious to all human beings, except beautiful blond or buxom women.)

In the past month, I’ve had New Yorkers hold doors for me, offer me their seats on the subway, and allowed me to go ahead of them on lines. Amazing! (FYI—I’m not a beautiful blond or buxom woman.) In a few cases, however, I’ve felt the courtesy was extended to me by a twenty-something New Yorker who felt he or she should be especially kind to an old lady. At those times, I’ve wanted to laugh out loud. Although I don’t feel any different than I did when I was twenty-something, I clearly look much, much older.

Am I defeated because twenty-somethings think I'm old? No way. My style goal isn’t to look like someone else, especially someone much, much younger. My style goal is to achieve the best possible version of me. I want to choose a hairstyle, cosmetics, clothing and accessories that flatter me--an over 50 woman.

The over 50 woman who wears a flattering outfit, has an upbeat, ready-to-laugh attitude and takes a genuine interest in the other guests will always be a belle at any holiday party. Not such a tall order, yes? Just be sure to avoid the following over 50 style faux pas...

#1: Cleavage
“Put those puppies away!” a male friend recently whispered in my ear as we watched from a distance an older woman with a very low-cut dress cross a restaurant’s dining room. I get that over 50 women are still sexual creatures and don’t want to dress like old asexual frumps. But we don’t want to look like elderly hookers either. Alternatives: Tops and dresses that show skin, but not cleavage, like...

# 2: Big Jewelry
Who started this trend for older woman? I suspect it was a thirty-something fashion magazine editor who thought, “No one wants to look at older women. If I tell older women to wear big jewelry, then people can focus on the jewelry instead of all those wrinkles.” For me, big jewelry is the equivalent of a Time Square billboard announcing, “I’m an Old Lady! Look at My Old Lady Jewelry!” Alternative: Stylish jewelry—simple chains with small charms or delicate stone or bead designs. If, like me, you thought eBags only sold jewelry boxes and travel jewelry pouches, think again. The site has lots of reasonable priced jewelry, such as (click on photo or product name to go to eBag.com)...

#3: Red Lipstick
I understand the desire to create a fun and festive look for the evening. And it’s true that you should wear a little more makeup at night, when the sun’s harsh glare is gone. But your evening makeup should continue to look natural. Cherry or ruby red lipstick is not natural. Neither are caked on eyeliner, foundation and bronzer. While extreme makeup can look dramatic on a twenty-something woman, it just looks scary and severe on older women. Alternative: Choose a lip color that is just one shade darker than your natural color. And again, let your flattering party outfit and, perhaps, a professional hair ‘blow-out’ express your natural beauty and self-contentment.

Footnote: Looking for a fun activity next time you’re with girlfriends? Check out What Your Lips Say About You. Your lip print left on a hard surface (which doesn’t necessarily match the shape of your actual lips) apparently reveals certain things about you. Next time you’re with girlfriends, bring along squares of sturdy paper and this video slideshow.

#4: Showing Too Much Skin
You might call this “Part B” to the no cleavage advice. Showing cleavage, especially after beach season, is by far the worst offense an over 50 woman can commit. But special consideration should be given to finding the right degree of skin exposure. For instance, by and large, over 50 woman can't pull off spaghetti straps or a strapless garment. Even a top with a wide scoop and three-quarter sleeves can show too much chest skin and wash you out, if, like me, you've got pale skin in December. Alternatives: Find tops and dresses that offer the right skin balance--that is, enough skin to keep you looking feminine without so much skin that you look like an aging street walker. And at this time of year, bold flattering colors really help.

Anne Klein Mixed Media Tiered Pullover (Black)
is perfect for women over 50. Not only is it sleeveless with a round neck (one of my favorite combinations for over 50 women), but it has all those soft ruffle layers. The long necklace makes the torso look longer and slimmer.

Anne Klein Pullover With Zip Back (Black)
with its boat neck is great for women with broad shoulders. It's available for $50.99.

I debated whether to include this
Jones New York Long Sleeve Seamed Button Front Shirt (White)

for $79 because the model is wearing one of those ridiculous big necklaces with it. But I love this top because it's so feminine with its V-neck, long sleeves and tailoring. Just promise me, if you buy this blouse or something like it, you'll wear a sensible, stylish necklace with it.

Living in a cold climate sometimes requires something wooly. The wide-necked
Anne Klein Mohair Pullover (Red)
looks feminine despite its wooly long sleeves. It's available for $89.

#5: Tired Eyes
I know, I know—tired eyes are a fact of life for women over 50. And this time of year--so busy and sleep depriving--can be the worst time for your eyes. Alternatives: It might not be possible to get more sleep, but below are some remedies that might help...
  • Cucumber slices. When I have time in the morning, I use the classic cucumber remedy. I’m not convinced it reduces the puffiness at all, but cucumber slices over the eyelids sure does feel good. The juice from the cucumber supposedly helps to reduce the dark circles, too.
  • Cold Compress. No cucumbers in the house? A cold compress made with a face cloth doused in cold water works.
  • Garnier Anti-Puff Eye Roller. When I’m in a hurry to get to work, I use this anti-puff roller. Like all the remedies, I’m not sure that it does anything other than feel cool and wonderful.
  • Cold spoons. I haven't tried this, but I may. Place two two spoons in the freezer and let them get cold (but not frozen).
  • Milk puffs. Apparently, milk has health properties. Dip cotton puffs in whole milk and place on your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes, several times a day, to relieve eye soreness and puffiness.
  • Tea bags. Brewed tea (you choose the flavor) is another remedy. Place two tea bags in a small pot of boiling water for 5 minutes. Remove and chill. Once cold, place the tea bags over your eyes to reduce itchiness and soreness, dark circles, puffiness, and the bloodshot look.
Do you have other fashion and style things you think women over 50 should avoid? I'd love to hear them.

Happy Holidays!

Holiday 2010: Party Tops Over 50

Jones New York Sleeveless Sequined Blouse,

Editor's Note: This post was updated 11/30/11. For more dressy tops, visit Dressy Tops for the Holidays

Is there a month more social than December? I don’t have an inordinate number of friends and acquaintances by any stretch. But between the party invitations from work colleagues (mine and my husband’s), friends and family, my social life bustles during the last weeks of the year. And it never fails that right about now I find myself in a panic: I’m sick of my party clothes! Instead of staying focused on finishing my Christmas shopping and wrapping, I find myself sidetracked by the desire for a new party top to get me through Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. If you’re experiencing the same dilemma, here are some flattering tops I found online. From stand-out detailing to simple sophistication, there's a holiday top for every woman over 50.

PARTY DETAILS
What makes a top a party top? Clearly, it's in the details. Unfortunately, those details--lace, beads, sequins--often add to the expense of the blouse or sweater. However, the Jones New York Sleeveless Sequined Blouse, ($79) is lovely and moderately priced.

This next designer sequin blouse is very feminine, though I'm not crazy about the way it's styled here. This over 50 party girl would wear it with dressy black slack or a skirt.

LOVELY LACE
Not everyone is a glitter girl. Tops with lace or sheer detailing are a dressy alternative. Most of my over 50 girlfriends aren't thrilled with their upper arms, so I've included two tops with 3/4 sleeves. I really love this first one with the tie waist.

Holiday 2010: Flattering Over 50 Dresses

Jones New York Ruffle Front Wrap A-Line Dress (Blue)

There aren’t too many things that say “I’m 50 and ready for fun” like a pretty party dress. With so many opportunities for dressing down in modern life, why not celebrate the 2010 holidays by dressing up? This season, there are lots of holiday dresses that will flatter women over 50.

If you're not crazy about the idea of splurging on a garment you can't wear everyday, look for something with a simple, classic design--like a little black dress or a simple V-neck dress. For instance, there's the Elbow Sleeve Drape Front Jersey Dress from Donna Ricco at Lord and Taylor. This simple black dress is on sale for $87.00. If you happen to be slim and trim (you lucky girl!), take a look at the Jacquard Pleat Neck Sheath at Anne Taylor Loft for $89.50. The Patra Dress, Beaded Empire Cocktail Dress is a classic V-neck design. It's on sale for $111.30 at Macy's. Or consider this Jessica Howard Dress, Three Quarter Cocktail Dress, which is black and has a V-neck, for $82.00 at Macy's. You'll be able to wear these dresses for years.

Here's a little black dress that offers a generous fit. It's a Shabby Apple design for $88.

Those party dresses, however, are just the tip of the holiday party dresses iceberg, so to speak. Take a peek at the online Cocktail Dresses at Lord and Taylor. If you shop now, you can take advantage of the department store's "Friends and Family" 25% off sale. Macy's helps you narrow down its choices with a Dress Finder feature. You can search for dresses by body type and occasion. There is even a Dress Quiz to find your perfect style.

DRESS SALE AND MORE
Selected Women's Dresses from Shabby Apple are currently on sale during the online. In addition, the clothing company is having a Twelve Days of Christmas sale. Check back here to see the current day's item on sale and the code to use, if you'd like to purchase it for 25% off. For...
Friday, December 17, the item on sale is:

Simply Alice

This pretty bracelet is made of grey/blue fresh water pearls finished with a cream satin bow. It also has a chain and lobster clasp for easy removal. The hardware is silver plated. Measurements:8” inches at furthest link.

FIVE FLATTERING LOOKS FOR OVER 50

RUFFLES
Ruffles are soft and distracting--making them a wonderful design accent for over 50 women. The dress at the very top of this post is Jones New York Ruffle Front Wrap A-Line Dress (Blue) for $168.

There's also the Taylor Dress, Sleeveless Satin Cocktail Dress, which is on sale for $103.60 at Macy's. And at Nordstrom, you'll find the Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Ruffled Cotton Blend Dress for $118.

DRAPING
I love dresses for over 50 women that have draping in front because it hides all sorts of lumps and bumps. For instance...

Anne Klein Ripple Dress (Bronze)

Anne Klein Ripple Dress (Bronze)
for $148.

Or take a look at Jacquard Bow Dress for $209 at Talbots online. The side bow creates gentle folds below the waist.

FLOW
Do you look good in a thigh-tight sheath? I don't. And even if I did, I'm not interested in that kind of confinement, are you? I prefer a comfortable dress that's loose around the hips and thighs. For example...

JERSEY SHIRRED DRESS-ASST-GARNET

This JERSEY SHIRRED DRESS-ASST-GARNET flows and drapes. You'll find it at Max Studio for $98.

THREE-QUARTER SLEEVES
Three-quarter sleeves offer upper-arm coverage without making you feel like you're all covered-up. Plus, it's a very feminine sleeve length. The dress below is another classic that you'll be able to enjoy again and again.
Anne Klein Faille Dress (Black)

Anne Klein Faille Dress (Black)
for $148.

LACE
I've listed lace last, but that means nothing. Lace is wonderful stuff! It shows a little skin, but none of the skin's flaws. It eludes to the fact that you're still a sexual creature, but you don't need to prove it. Below is Michael Stars Harlowe Lace Shift Dress. The lace makes it dressy and feminine. It also looks ultra-comfy. It's available for $168.

Chiffon is another flattering fabric. I love the Anne Klein Chiffon Overlay Dress (Black) below. It's available for $236.

Holiday Shopping in New York City (or Online)

Holiday shopping in New York City is a family tradition. When I was growing up, my mother would take my sisters and me on the train into the city for my father’s annual holiday office party. My dad’s office was in the Empire State Building, so we’d arrive in the city early and stroll down Fifth Avenue from Grand Central Station to 34th Street, looking at the department store holiday window decorations. Yesterday, I met my sister and her twenty-five-year-old daughter in the city for a day of shopping and viewing the Big Apple’s holiday decorations. I’m sharing our holiday excursion and would love to hear what other people do when they visit New York City at this time of year. I'm also including the websites and video clips for the various stops we made, in case you want to have a virtual holiday shopping and decoration viewing experience.

Stop #1 – Rockefeller Center
Here’s the famous Christmas tree being lit…

Our first stop was Rockefeller Center to see the tree. Our strategy: Get there early before it was overrun with tourists. On route, we picked up holiday Starbucks coffees. My niece said it was "a must." I got the “Peppermint Mocha,” my sister got the “Gingerbread Latte,” and my niece got the “Carmel Burlee Latte.” Tis the season, yes? After the tree, we walked across the street to view the holiday windows at Saks Fifth Avenue. You can check out the Saks Fifth Avenue’s holiday decorations by clicking on the video clip below. You have to admit: New York City stores go all out.

Stop #2 – The Stores at the Museum of Modern Art
The museum has not one, but two gift shops on either side of 53rd Street. I love to stroll down the aisles of these handsome shops and admire all the beautifully designed gifts. However, MoMA has made shopping online very easy. If you click on “gift ideas” along the navigation bar, a drop down offers gift ideas under $100, $50 and $25 as well as ideas of him and her and more. There’s jewelry, scarves, handbags for her and wallets, funky flash drives, and wooden alarm clocks for him—among many, many other things. I’ve ordered online from MoMA before. The process was easy and delivery was speedy. (Though I don’t know what delivery is like at holiday time!) Click on the name to shop online.

Stop #3 -- Holiday Market at Bryant Park
We took a bus down Fifth Avenue to Bryant Park. The park is behind the New York Public Library at 42nd Street. The market boosts over 128 artisans displaying their fine workmanship. Each booth was more beautiful than the last. Unfortunately, you have to visit the holiday markets in person in order to shop.

Stop #4 and #5 -- Lord and Taylor and Macy’s
These two department stores have had holiday decorations for as long as I can remember. Here’s a clip of Lord and Taylor’s decorations at Fifth Ave. and 38th Street…

And here’s a glimpse of Macy’s holiday display at Herald Square…

Stop #6 – ABC Carpet
From Herald Square, we took the subway down to Union Square and walked a couple of blocks to ABC Carpet at Broadway and East 19th Street. This store's name is deceiving. Yes, you'll find a beautiful collection of carpets. In fact, ABC Carpet saved my marriage when it looked like my husband and I would never agree on a new area rug for our living room. We found one at ABC Carpet. Since then, however, I've shopped for everything from jewelry and shawls to glassware and pillows. It’s a beautiful store with lovely gift ideas. Click on the name to shop online.

Stop #7 – Chocolate By the Bald Guy
The purpose of our next stop: To eat and rest our weary feet. (Although, the restaurant has a lovely chocolate gift shop. Since special chocolates always make a great holiday hostess gift, my sister and I stocked up.) In addition to a full menu of chocolate delights (from chocolate Martinis to chocolate fondue) Chocolate by the Bald Guy offers a full menu of non-chocolate things like pizzas, burgers and much more. CBTBG is located at 841 Broadway, just below Union Square.

Stop #8 – Union Square Holiday Market
After lunch, we wandered through the Union Square Holiday Market. While Bryant Park's market had lots and lots of beautiful things, they tended to be a bit pricey. At Union Square, gifts range in prices from expensive jewelry to very reasonably priced stocking stuffers. Like the Bryant Park market, we found lots of unique gifts.

Stop #9 – Kate’s Paperie
True confession: I love everything related to stationery--paper, notebooks, pens, etc. However, Kate’s Paperie is so much more than a stationery store. If you’re shopping online, check out the gifts for under $25—including laptop cases, notebooks, and Moroccan tea glass candles. And if you’re lucky enough to have grandchildren already, check out the Night Shadow Puppets, Medieval Castle set for $16.50—I love them! The store also has beautiful (albeit pricey) materials for wrapping gifts—paper and ribbons. From time to time, I splurge on the materials for very special presents. There are three locations for Kate's Paperie in the city, so check the website for a convenient store. We went to the one at 8 West 13th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues).

Stop #10 Soapology

Soapology is located at 67 8th Ave (where the avenue intersects with Greenwich Avenue). After a day of shopping, it was nice to visit this cozy shop. If you tell the shopkeepers that it’s your first visit (which is was for my sister and niece), they will treat your hands to a multi-step process that includes gorgeous soaps, scrubs, and creams. Your hands will feel buttery afterwards. (If only they could have worked on my feet as well!) All the Soapology products--the scrubs, creams, soaps and lotions--are made with natural ingredients. You can choose products with the fragrance already in it or design your own combination of fragrances. My sister and niece had fun designing their own lotions.

You'll only find Soapology in New York City, but you can shop online. I love giving people the soy candles for holiday gifts. Not only do the candles have wonderful scents and burn for 60 hours, but you can use them as a massage oil. Just blow out the candle, dip your finger in the melted wax, and massage the oil into your skin. Heavenly. I bought the shower gel in the picture above for myself. My old legs get so dry during the winter. I find they don't look like a battlefield when I shave with Soapology's shower gel.

After that, I delivered my sister and niece to Grand Central Station to catch the train home. I think I speak for all of us when I say we had a great day of shopping and taking in the holiday decorations. I love the city year-round, but there is something very special about holiday time in the Big Apple.
